Alternative

LET'S BREAK IT DOWN

Plane

As of September 2022:

  • United Airlines- The only direct flight from NY to Napoli, about 9 hours.

  • Delta- NY to Napoli, with a connection in Paris

  • ITA (formally Alitalia)- NY to Napoli with a connection in Rome

Closest Airports:

  • Napoli (Naples) aka NAP/ Capodichino, aka Naples, about 45 minutes driving.

  • Roma (Rome) aka FCO/Fiumicino/Leonardo da Vinci about 3 hours driving.

Obviously, you can also hop a flight from Rome to Napoli if need be. Or perhaps charter a private jet or helicopter to Sorrento.

(Can we join you?).

Other airports:

Milan, Florence or Bari etc... just depends on your Itinerary.

Train

  • Circumvesuviana-Local train from Napoli to Sorrento- you can only purchase tickets in person from station or newspaper shops called "Tabacchi". They're older trains, without AC or luggage storage areas. Plus they stop at every town along the way, making the journey about an hour.

  • Campania Express- Touristic Train that leaves from Napoli Piazza Garibaldi station (next to Naples train station) from Naples to Sorrento.Takes about 30 mins.

  • Trenitalia- Normal train or Frecciarossa- The high speed train from Rome to Sorrento. You can also use Italo, another fast train, to book tickets.

Once you've landed in Italy, trains are one of the most economical ways of getting around. If you're familiar with any NY area trains, using them should be pretty easy for you. Just keep in mind local (not high speed) trains are harder to travel with larger luggage (not carry-on).

Ferry

A Napoli to Sorrento ferry trip is a lovely way to travel while taking in the charming coastal views.

  • Napoli's airport to its main ferry port (called Molo Beverello) is only about 10 mins via car.

  • In general, the ferries are easy and comfortable to use.

  • The fast ferries tend to sell out, so be sure to book as soon as you figure out your itinerary.

  • When you arrive by ferry to Sorrento you will be sea-level, and must take a pretty long walk to an elevator in the cliff up to the main part of town. BUT there are taxis that can take you!

  • Ferries can also be utilized for travel between Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast towns as well. We highly suggest ferries over buses! Buses get packed, hot, and can lead to car sickness. Just make sure you check the schedule and stay on track!

Tickets & Schedule

Bus

  • As a budget friendly option, buses do require more effort and additional time to get to the actual bus terminals, so they're probably not your best bet as far an "easy" or quick option goes.

  • We've also heard they don't always run on-time, but we haven't had enough personal experience with them.

  • Buses are a better option for intra-city travel between Sorrento and The Amalfi Coast towns. However, they do take a long time and on those windy cliff-side roads, the car-sickness factor is SUPER HIGH.

  • Tickets can be purchased at newspaper shops ("Tabacchi"), or online through different apps, check them out HERE.

Car

  • Private Car: Ok our bougie fancy friend! Clearly a private transfer is the most comfortable and most convenient option offered. Find Apps and websites we've used before to book private transfers HERE.

  • Rent a Car: Driving in Italian cities is next level aka. Mario Andretti driving! Basically, NYC x 1000. Road rules are essentially suggestions. Most rental car places offer manual cars (stick-shift). If there any automatic vehicles available, the cost can double. Parking is impossible on the Amalfi coast, and driving on the tiny, narrow streets is something we wouldn't recommend. Sal has rented cars in other areas before, so feel free to ask about his experience.
